TRANSPARENT CURTAINS SOFTEN THE LIGHT

Drawing inspiration from the white, transparent curtains adorning the windows of houses in Akniste, Latvia, and the collective and individual gestures of participants in the Sansusi Well-Being Programme — residents of the local nursing home and psychiatric hospital living somewhat apart from societal rhythms — I embroidered patterns onto locally sourced papers and materials. Like curtains that both veil and reveal, the works reflect the thresholds between the private and the public, fragility and visibility. Through this process, I aimed to create subtle connections between myself, the participants, the local community and the place itself.
